Mission & Vision
SoundQuest, despite being a personal website, operates with a mission and vision to maintain a steadfast stance on providing information.
Mission
Supporting Musical Diversity through Theory
The approach to Western music theory has constantly evolved in tandem with societal changes. There have been eras strongly tied to religion and others closely linked to science. In the 21st century, we find ourselves in an era of equality and diversity. Instead of engaging in disputes to establish uniform values or determine superiority and inferiority, humanity has come to realize that the world becomes richer when we mutually understand diverse perspectives. This applies not only to society at large but also to the world of music.
In such times, theory is expected to function not as a prescriptive authority determining a single “correct answer” but as a catalyst for fostering interest and understanding in diverse forms of music. Theory becomes a bridge between cultures, supporting the development of music. Theory itself communicates the importance of respecting different cultures and values. I believe this is the mission that music theory in the 21st century should fulfill.
Vision
Making Music Theory Ubiquitous
SoundQuest aims for a world where music theory breathes in everyday life, where it is commonplace for musicians to be familiar with theory. It envisions the harmonious coexistence of various music theory for diverse music, the world where people can discuss and learn about theories with joy, free from the threat of any hate surrounding theoretical discussions. To achieve such future, SoundQuest presents a model of music theory and curriculum that respects freedom and diversity, continuously striving to pursue this ideal system.
History
SoundQuest is a fully independent website operated by an individual. It traces its origins back to a Japanese music theory information site called “SONIQA”, which was published in September 2010. During a time when personal websites were flourishing, SONIQA was created with the goal of making music theory more accessible to the public.
It started as a small website, but its innovative approach had already been established since its inception. The curriculum followed a unique sequence distinct from typical music theory books, separating classical and popular theories, and providing theoretical insights into melodies. Additionally, it explored examples of breaking the conventional rules.
In 2015, the site took a hiatus and, after a lengthy preparation period, re-emerged in 2018 under the banner of a new school of theory called “Liberal Music Theory”. This revival marked the birth of SoundQuest. Subsequently, It has been translated into Chinese and Korean by volunteers, demonstrating its international expansion. And finally, it was translated into English by the author’s own hand and released in 2024.
With the decline of sites run by individuals, non-profit large individual sites might seem peculiar today. However, SoundQuest continues to operate in the same timeless manner as it always has. This site stands as a survivor from the “good old days” of the 2000s internet.
